Partnership Forged On MEMS For Smartphones And Tablets

02/15/2015 18:25:12

The indoor navigation, activity-monitoring market will become a reality now that Murata and SPI have teamed up.

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and Sensor Platforms, Inc. (SPI) have had a collaborative relationship for over three years.

The newly developed best PDR (Pedestrian Dead Reckoning) algorithm by SPI, combined with Murata’s high-accuracy, low-power, low noise MEMS technology (pressure sensor currently under development), will minimise the error over distance travelled, bringing much needed accuracy to the PDR market. It is expected to lead to a first in consumer satisfaction.

By using SPI’s PDR function, customers are able to detect position, utilising a variety of sensors with its algorithm. With Murata’s MEMS sensor high-accuracy height detection added into this function, it will enable precise Z-axis information, enabling users to freely move around the third dimension world.

Minimum power consumption is always a critical issue for smartphone and tablet devices, however this will also be accomplished by utilising both Murata’s hardware and SPI’s software.
